Childhood Roots in Ngāpuhi
Growing up in Ohaeawai, Mane’s early experiences in the Taiāmai landscape shaped a resilient Ngāpuhi identity. From catching frogs with Ngāti Rangi cousins to living on Ngāi Tawake and Ngāti Tautahi land in Mataraua, these formative years cultivated a unique perspective.
Leadership Journey Across Communities
Mane’s leadership journey spans communities and roles. Having worked among post-settlement iwi in Nelson, he gained insights that fueled his return home. At Te Iringa, he played a pivotal role in establishing hapū marae-based whanau services, offering support for kaumātua, taitamariki, and everyone in between. His diverse roles, including Ngāpuhi Iwi Social Services (Business Manager) and Te Hauora o Ngāpuhi (Projects Manager), showcase his commitment to addressing the needs of
Ngāpuhi whanau, marae, and hapū.
As a trustee on the Te Hauauru Takiwā, he continues to contribute to the well-being of Ngāpuhi.
Preparedness, Legacy, and Vision
Reflecting on grassroots experiences, the chairperson underscores the importance of staying connected to the ground. His leadership approach, characterised by humility, transparency, and love for Ngāpuhi, envisions leaving a positive legacy—a strategic pursuit of a “Ngāpuhi Golden Era.”
This era symbolises prosperity and growth for Ngāpuhi, driven by encouraging, acting, and potentially disrupting to bring about positive change.
Waitangi Day and Future Priorities
As Waitangi Day approaches, the chairperson emphasises Toitū He Whakaputanga, Toitū Te Tiriti, urging Ngāpuhi descendants to safeguard these agreements. Understanding every facet of these documents is paramount for the iwi’s future prosperity.
