Whata Kai is a Ngāpuhi Iwi Social Services (NISS) led initiative that addresses food insecurity through community collaboration and strengthens the existing kai support network across the rōhe. With the help of Foodstuffs and alongside key partners, Whata Kai assists whānau facing economic hardship by providing kai relief and connection to other supports, services and resources.

How can I support ?

“Whata Kai provides a safe and mana enhancing environment where whānau can rest, enjoy a kaputī and engage in kōrero”

As we further develop our Mahinga Kai and Kāuta, there will also be opportunities for workshops, learning and shared matauranga about growing and preparing kai.

HOW IT WORKS

Whānau needing kai support can be referred to Whata Kai through NISS or other services currently working alongside them.

Whata Kai uses a points system to ensure fair access for everyone. Each item is given a points value, and whānau receive a set number of points to shop for their groceries. Whānau may also contribute a kōha towards their groceries.

Kōha & Support

The sustainability of Whata Kai relies on the collective strength and ongoing generosity of our whānau, local businesses and community partners. If you can support with knowledge, skills, supplies or financial contributions please get in touch with us or choose one of these options.
